Cuban cigars fall into the following groups: Current Production Cigars Presently only handmade cigars are in the Habanos range. The majority are long-filler, but a few are short-filler. Discontinued Production Cigars Discontinued cigars relate to official factory production, not availability. For older cigars, this does not necessarily indicate availability up to the date shown, as some cigars ceased being made long before being officially discontinued. Some older discontinued cigars can be obtained (at a premium) in the vintage market. Recently discontinued cigars may remain commercially available for a short time, but tend to be quickly sold out. Special Release Cigars Special Series include either annually or periodic releases of special vitolas, packaging, special aged tobacco etc. They are generally available short term, in limited quantities, and are sold at a premium price. Non-Commercial Cigars These are basically non-commercial cigars made for special occasions or are generally available to attendees, or are only available by auction, or are pre-production cigars and the like. Generally, these cigars and releases are not listed on this website. Mini Cigars Mini cigars are machine-made cigars that weigh less than 3 grams and use short filler tobacco. They are available in some Cuban cigar brand names. Up to circa 2001, they were produced outside Cuba using 100% Cuban Tobacco. After circa 2001, mini-cigars were made within Cuba by Internacional Cubana de Tabacos S.A. under licence to Habanos SA, and could then be legally called Cuban cigars. They were packed in cardboard packs and were marked "Habanos S.A." and "HECHO EN CUBA" and have the small version of the Cuban warranty seal (~60 mm x ~21mm) on the pack. This warranty seal does not have a serial number. They were initially available in two sizes, a Mini (20 x 87) and a Club (24 x 93). They were generally available in packs of 10's or 20's, did not have bands or cellophane sleeves, and were pre-cut. In circa 2005 a new size, a Puritos (26 x 106) was introduced to the mini cigar range. They are normally available in packs of 5 and boxes of 25, have cigar bands, and have cellophane sleeves. In circa 2005 mini cigars were taken out of the Habanos range. They are not included in this website. Cigarettes Cigarettes made from Cuban tobacco are available in some Cuban cigar brand names. The are not included in this website. |

The Edition Limitada Series (LE) distinguishes itself by the release of cigars that are not part of the current production range. Initially, the cigars were manufactured using a selection of two-year old aged wrappers from the upper level of the plant, to produce a unique darker colour. From 2007 on, the binder and filler leaves were also aged for two years. The releases are as follows: 2000 The first release of this series involved four brands.
2001 These cigars were not released until early to mid 2002, but have 2001 limited edition bands. A 2001 limited edition Vegas Robaina Prominente was also available to attendees at the 2002 Habano Festival, which celebrated the 5th Anniversary of the Vegas Robaina brand. Only 800 of these cigars were produced.
2002 There were no limited edition releases this year. This was probably due to the late release of the 2001 LE cigars and the lack of suitable two-year old wrapper tobacco. Habanos may well have underestimated the success of the limited edition concept. 2003 This release involved five brands.
2004 This release involved four brands.
2005 This release involved three brands.
2006 This is the Fifth Anniversary of the Limited Edition Series. It involved a re-issue of three of the most popular LE cigars to date.
2007 This release involves three brands. This was the first release where all the tobacco (wrapper, binder, & filler) has been aged two years.
2008 This release will involve three brands. |

The success of the German 5th Avenue Gold Medal release in 2004 is considered by many as initiating the Regional Release series. Initially, the worldwide Global & Niche brands were excluded from this series, but in 2007 a "Montecristo" was released in Mexico under the (previously unheard-of) Edmundo Dante brand name. The Regional Edition (RE) cigars are special limited-production cigars made for specific regional markets on a (normally) once-off basis and are available for a 1 or 2 year period. After this, the cigar can be considered by Habanos for inclusion in the current production range. Each release is initiated by the Regional Distributor, who under-right the setup costs. Some distributors elect to reissue in the second year. Reissue cigars are identical but the box leaflet has a statement "Its great acceptance encourages us to present this edition again.....", or similar depending on the country of distribution. The re-releasing of editions, the proliferation of regional editions, and the conversion of some releases into standard production cigars is not viewed as desirable by many. The cigars may be new vitolas or reinstated old vitolas. The cigars normally have two bands. The main band is normally standard production but can be a modified or old replica band. The second band is a red & silver regional edition band. The form of this band varies. The 2005 UK release only had a single band. The Region names (Spanish » English) are as follows:
The following listing does not include re-releases. They are not separately listed, as they are basically the same cigar and official information on re-releases is difficult to obtain or confirm. Where re-release information is known, it is included in the detailing listing for each cigar. 2005 This first year had 5 releases.
2006 This year had 6 new releases.
2007 This year had 8 new releases.
2008 This year 17 new releases are proposed.
